Burgess Carey, born in 1965, is married to Sarah and has two daughters.
Burgess attended The Lawrenceville High School in Lawrenceville , NJ and then attended the University of Kentucky , graduating from the University of Vermont in 1998 with a BA. Burgess then went to study environmental science at the University of Utah , N.O.L.S. in Baja Mexico , and N.O.L.S. in Kenya .
In 1989, Burgess cofounded Carey Technologies, a recycling company promoting the beneficial re-use of organic biosolids and other valuable waste streams for reclamation and soil maintenance in Kentucky , West Virginia , and Virginia . This included recycling facilities in Bowling Green , Lexington and Louisville , KY. In 1992, Burgess founded CTP, LLC, a real estate company in Jessamine Count y , KY and began construction on Crestview Center , a 65 acre Commercial and Industrial development between Nicholasville and Lexington KY.
In 1993, Burgess founded Safe Storage Inc. consisting of 3 self storage and truck rental facilities with a total of 218,000 sq. ft. In 1994, he founded Boone Creek Properties LLC and purchased the former Jolly Rodger Restaurant Site. Continuing to grow and expand, Burgess cofounded GBC OIL, LLC, Shell Oil Products marketer with a 9500 sq. ft. co-branded convenience store in 1995 which is now operated under a lease agreement.
In 2002, the initial environmental education and wilderness skills programs were offered by Boone Creek while BCAC hosted the Kentucky Riverkeeper and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Today, BCAC attracts over 20 members, the National Paddling Film Festival, and a healthy fishery on Boone Creek. In 2003, Burgess founded 720 S. Main LLC and purchased 24 apartment units in Nicholasville , KY. In this past year, Burgess has been busy expanding Safe Storage Inc. to include an additional 40,000 sq. ft. of climate controlled space. Phase 2 of CTP's expansion to add 8,733 sq. ft. of retail space and 9,000 sq. ft. of office/warehouse space.
In his local region, Burgess is a past member of the Kentucky Recycling Association, Bluegrass Tomorrow, Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Bluegrass, First Southern Bank, and present member of the Sierra Club, Trout Unlimited, Bluegrass Wildwater Association, and the Advisory Board of Trustees of the Lexington Public Library.
